Autumn Skincare: Say YES to SPF

Summer has come to an end and we are definitely going to miss it. From beautiful clear skies, and days spent soaking up the sun to the summer skincare glow. With the summer now over, we need to continue protecting our skin and wearing SPF.

During the summer season, we are reminded to wear sunscreen all day every day to protect our skin and prevent skin damage. But now that we’re coming into the calmer autumn season, which means less sun, colder mornings, and more days spent at home in our pjs, SPF protection is just as important as it is on hot summer days sitting by the pool.

Though you are less likely to suffer sunburn during the Autumn/Winter months, the colder weather can cause skin to become drier and vulnerable to sun damage. According to data collected by the Skin Cancer Foundation, even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can reach the earth and harm the skin. UV rays can reach the skin through simple everyday activities such as going on a walk, shopping, driving, or sitting next to a window (because yes, windows don't block UV rays from damaging your skin). Even on snow days, the snow can reflect as much as 80% of UV radiation, which is much higher than the amount reflected on summer days spent by the water or dry sandy beach.

The skincare mantra “It’s easier to prevent than it is to cure” is so true.

Just because you can’t see the damage right now doesn’t mean it isn’t there, so take care of your skin before it's too late. Where there’s daylight there is sun, so UV rays are unavoidable and your best protection from preventing damage such as premature ageing, sunburn, discoloration, and skin cancer is your sunscreen.

The good news is that the skincare market is filled with sunscreens to suit every skin type. Whether you have dry, oily, combination, sensitive skin or you need SPF 30, or SPF 50, there’s sunscreen out there that can meet your skincare needs whilst providing protection. Many dermatologists and skin care professionals recommend wearing sunscreen, no matter the weather, for the best long-lasting skincare results and ultimate protection.

Pro Skin Tip - Applying sunscreen as the final step in your skincare routine helps your skincare routine to be the most effective. Some skincare ingredients such as Vitamin C and Retinol require you to wear sunscreen when using these ingredients on your skin because they can cause skin to become more sensitive to the sun.

To get the best out of your routine and keep your summer glow all year round remember your SPF protection.
