Autumn Skincare: A Guide to Keep the Glow
Our summer loving is coming to an end and now it’s time to embrace chilly weather, cosy nights in, and a new autumn skincare routine.
This new season brings us cold and dry air that is harsh on our skin, leading to irritation, dryness, and dullness. Turning up the indoor heating can also cause skin to lose moisture and feel very dry. Since the elements seem to be working against us, our skin will react and this will cause skin to be more prone to breakouts, dryness, and dullness.
But don’t worry, just a few minor changes to your skincare routine can help you to achieve your summer glow in the fall.
That Girl Autumn Skincare Tips
Here are our skincare tips to help transition into autumn and have happy and healthy skin all season round.
Cleansers
A good cleanser will wash away excess dirt and oil at the end of the day, but we must be mindful that we don’t strip skin of our natural oils, as those oils keep our skin moisturised. Look for a hydrating cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight or dry - a gentle yet hydrating cream or oil cleanser is recommended.Less Exfoliation (AHAs + BHAs)
As the season changes, so does our skin and during autumn our skin may be prone to sensitivity and irritation, so it’s best to reduce the use of chemical exfoliants (1-2 times per week). Over-exfoliation can create small cracks in the skin and this will cause moisture loss. During the colder months, our complexion can become more sensitive and irritated, so it is important to focus on repairing and moisturising.Hydrating Serums
Serums are a great way to incorporate specific hydrating ingredients into your skincare routine. Ingredients such as squalene, beeswax, and glycerine are great additions to your routine and will help prevent dryness and restore skin during the colder months.Thicker Creams
The summer brings humidity and more moisture into the air, which means that, for our skin, less is more in the summer. But during autumn the air is dry and cold causing our skin to be more irritated and suffer moisture loss, so we must use thicker moisturisers that will add moisture and hydration back to our skin.
Shea butter, ceramides & fatty acids are great ingredients that will support your skin barrier and prevent dryness or irritation.SPF
Rain or shine, it’s the skincare tip that will never leave. Even though days may be duller and nights earlier that doesn’t take away the UV rays that will damage our skin during the day (do not be fooled). To make sure that all the effort we put into our skin doesn’t go to waste, i’s important to protect our skin and prevent signs of aging with SPF every day.
Warning! Don’t bombard your skin with products that aren’t all necessary for your skin as this can cause skin to feel oily and irritated. Remember to always give your skin what it needs.
A little extra love for your skin …
Invest in an Air Humidifier
Indoor heating can cause the air to become dry and the skin to lose moisture. Keeping a humidifier in your room can prevent the air and your skin from becoming too dry (especially at night-time). Sit it beside your bed and enjoy the feeling of waking up without dry and patchy skin.Hydration from the Inside
Drinking more water and consuming a hydrating diet (berries, lettuce, cucumbers & watermelon) can improve the feel and appearance of skin.
Skincare shouldn’t be stressful, it’s a form of self-care and we should enjoy the ritual of looking after ourselves through skincare. Fall can be so beautiful and you should feel that too, so don’t let the colder weather scare you from reaching your skin dreams. Adapt your skin to what it needs each season and you will be glowing no matter the weather.
